My StorY
Two things inspired me to start Marmee’s Daughter. The first was my amazing mother. My mom could make anything out of fabric. She made our clothes growing up. She made incredible personalized gifts. She was always creating. When I lost her in 2017, I inherited her sewing machines. She had taught me to sew in high school and I had dabbled in it through the years but primarily I made art in other ways. Now I had this fancy new embroidery machine and an emptiness in my heart, so I started to sew to feel closer to my mom. It opened a whole new world to me and I fell in love with all of the things you can do with a fancy embroidery machine, especially creating appliscapes, but more on that later.
Then in early March 2020, I received an amazing gift in the mail, from my dear friend Elliott. She had sent me beautiful needlework. Things were just starting to get crazy with the pandemic and I had friends in the northeast who were starting to be quarantined. I was trying to think of something to make to send them a little gift in the mail when it hit me, why not try to make a face mask? I have tons of fabric and a sewing machine and let’s face it who wants to wear an ugly mask. I was inspired to try to make a whimsical face mask and put a post about it on Facebook. 24 hours later, I had over 200 orders. I started by creating a business page - Marmee’s Masks on Facebook but things started happening so fast I had to evolve to this site. So here I am making face masks! I hope that one of my masks will make you feel a little lighter when you put on and thank you for helping keep everyone safe. Be Well.
- Love, Jana
A little note about the name…
My day job is in children’s publishing and I have been a life long bibliophile. I have read Little Women more times that I could count. When I was trying to think of a clever name for the Facebook page, I was inspired by how Marmee worked tirelessly in the war effort. I was inspired by the same spirit to start making masks so Marmee’s Masks seemed like a fitting name. Every thing I make is because of my mom so it seemed obvious to evolve the brand to be Marmee’s Daughter because one day maybe I will be making something other than face masks.
